For some years we contemplated constructing a wildlife pond in a very wet field directly below the farmhouse. We are so pleased that we went ahead as since the pond was first created, in September 2009, it has very quickly become established – as if it’s been there for years!
From the beginning we were keen to encourage wildlife to the pond and we have had great success with several species of dragonfly, kingfishers, cormorants, a heron, Canada geese, mallard ducks, water voles and even a pair of otters visiting. We seem to have got the balance of plants and wildlife right and the reed mace (bulrushes), gunnera, restios, water lilies, flag iris and elodea are growing rapidly and giving us very clear water too.
